This U.S. Government course introduces students to the principles and structure of the American constitutional order, guiding them in the study of political truth, justice, and the responsibilities of citizenship. Through careful reading of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and other foundational texts, scholars examine the philosophical and historical roots of ordered liberty and self-government. Students study the structure and function of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, the relationship between the states and the national government, and the nature of civil liberties and civic duty. Instruction emphasizes close reading, thoughtful reflection, and disciplined inquiry, cultivating the habits of mind necessary for prudent judgment and responsible participation in civic life. Through this study, students come to understand the American republic as an expression of enduring principles grounded in reason, law, and the pursuit of the common good.
