Description

The English course, as its name suggests, seeks to cultivate the minds and hearts of students into more humane individuals by directing them in the pursuit of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty through Socratic inquiry into great works of Western literature. In tenth grade, students focus on modern European texts that wrestle with enduring questions of human nature, freedom, authority, faith, and reason, building upon the classical and medieval literary foundations established in earlier courses. Through close reading, seminar discussion, and sustained writing, students examine literature as a mirror of the human heart—exploring how authors use language, character, and form to reveal moral insight and universal human experience. Emphasis is placed on developing habits of careful reading, thoughtful listening, charitable dialogue, and clear written expression, as students practice the demanding art of thinking well through literature and enter more fully into the great conversation of the Western literary tradition.
