This 8th Grade Literature and Composition course deepens students’ mastery of language as a means of pursuing truth and understanding the human condition. Through the study of great works of medieval and modern literature, scholars encounter enduring themes of heroism, virtue, justice, and moral responsibility. Students develop clarity of thought and expression through careful reading, thoughtful discussion, and disciplined analytical writing, including the composition of well-formed essays grounded in textual evidence. Instruction emphasizes grammar, rhetoric, and the ordered structure of language, cultivating habits of reason, attentiveness, and articulate expression. Through this study, scholars grow in their ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and participate in the great literary tradition that prepares them for the intellectual rigor of Humane Letters and high school study.
